With worldwide fame, comes a sea of criticism, and as Taylor Swift has always been at the front and center of pop culture for decades, her ‘loud mistakes’ have not gone unnoticed.
Taylor Swift‘s lyrics has gotten more and more popular as the singer grew with her fans. The music star who started out as a country singer has explored a variety of genres and found fans of different identities, ethnicities, regions, and languages coming together as they could all find something relatable in her songs. Largely written from personal experiences, Tay Tay’s songs are up for interpretation by fans. But in the process some popular theories have thrived on the Internet even after Taylor denied their plausibility.
Taylor Swift responded to bisexual claims
Pop musicians typically stay out of politics, at least, that’s what Taylor Swift‘s team tried to convince her before she publicly voiced her opinion to vote for the Democrat candidate of Tennessee in 2018. But Tay Tay’s political awakening did not just stop at urging her fans to go out and vote.
The singer’s political awakening included her becoming a supportive voice for the LGBTQ community.
She also released the song You Need To Calm Down in 2019 . She featured her close friend and queer artist Todrick Hall and many more.
But as listeners try to ‘crack’ hidden messages in her lyrics they also can get it wrong. Some fans thought the signs meant Taylor Swift was bisexual, when she was an LGBTQ advocate.
Speaking of her activism for the queer community and fear of ‘loud mistakes,’ Taylor responded to the wild theories online.
She said at that time: “Rights are being stripped from basically everyone who isn’t a straight white cisgender male, I didn’t realize until recently that I could advocate for a community that I’m not a part of.
“It’s hard to know how to do that without being so fearful of making a mistake that you just freeze. Because my mistakes are very loud.”
When I make a mistake, it echoes through the canyons of the world. It’s clickbait, and it’s a part of my life story, and it’s a part of my career arc,” Taylor adds.
Taylor talks about her sexuality
Taylor’s extended support for the queer community through her song You Need To Calm Down caused mixed reactions among fans. While many hailed the All Too Well hitmaker for her efforts, some accused her of ‘queer baiting.’ In addition, a sub-section of Swifties has been claiming Taylor Swift is bisexual for a long time. It was about time that she addressed this.
So that’s what she did.
The Grammy-winning celebrity‘s songs, including Betty and Lavender Haze, often get used by ‘Gaylors’ who claim that T. Swizzle has been hinting about her sexuality through her songs. After years of speculation, she finally addressed the issue of her sexuality in 1989 Taylor’s Version note. She was candid about the scrutinization of her personal life and the limelight it receives.
Speaking of her life from 2014, when 1989 was originally released, the singer broke her silence.
Travis Kelce‘s girlfriend said: “It became clear to me that for me there was no such thing as casual dating, or even having a male friend who you platonically hang out with.”
She added: “If I was seen with him, it was assumed I was sleeping with him.”
Singer leaned on her friends but it was misinterpreted
So to put an end to the bizarre reports, the Is It Over Now singer leaned on her female friendships for support. But being a part of the community created more speculations about her sexuality.
“I swore off dating and decided to focus only on myself, my music, my growth, and my female friendships,” she wrote.
“If I only hung out with my female friends, people couldn’t sensationalize or sexualize that, right? I would learn later on that people could and people would.”
Fans on Reddit have also defended Taylor’s music.
Gushing over Taylor’s songs, a fan posted: “It’s not queer baiting for her to make music that queer people can also relate too. It’s not her fault what people read into her music. She’s not saying “I’m gay, I’m queer!” She’s a real person with real experiences. No one is entitled to her sexuality.”
